Cetyl alcohol is not to be confused with your favourite beverage or with the chemical isopropyl alcohol. Cetyl alcohol is a solid, waxy ingredient that is frequently found in cosmetics. Cetyl alcohol is an emulsifier that aids in the combination of oil and water in hair and skincare products such as lotions and cosmetics, resulting in a smooth consistency. As a moisturiser, it may be a worthwhile ingredient to include in your beauty and skin care routine.
Creating Homemade Lotion
2.7 fl oz (80 mL) of oil
1 fl oz (30 mL) of stearic acid
1.2 fl oz (35 mL) of shea butter
1.2 fl oz (35 mL) of cetyl alcohol
0.2 fl oz (5.9 mL) of phenonip
0.1 fl oz (3.0 mL) of fragrance oil
3.5 mL (0.12 fl oz) of coloring
Making a Creamy Luminizer
2.5 g of jojoba oil
0.75 g of cetyl alcohol
0.25 g of silica microspheres
1 g of hilite gold mica
0.25 g of gold mica
0.25 g of silver mica
0.0125 g of vitamin E oil
Method 1 Creating Homemade Lotion
1. Obtain a supply of cetyl alcohol as well as other ingredients for your homemade lotion project. Take note that the majority of lotions are made from a combination of oils, butters, distilled water, stearic acid, preservatives, and some type of emulsifier, such as cetyl alcohol, among other ingredients. Check online or go to a specialty shop to find more specific ingredients for your lotion, such as stearic acid, shea butter, and unique oils that are not readily available elsewhere.
Cetyl alcohol can be found in most beauty supply stores, as well as in most grocery stores. You can also purchase distilled water at your local grocery store.
Avocado oil, sunflower oil, and sweet almond oil are all excellent choices for a lotion base, as is coconut oil.
Preservatives help to keep your lotion fresh for a longer period of time than it would otherwise be. Phenonip is an excellent choice for this purpose.
This lotion will be made with both oil and water-based products, which are not typically used in the same formulation. Cetyl alcohol is an emulsifier, which means it is an ingredient that forces water and oil to mix together.
2. In a microwave-safe mixing bowl, combine your oils, stearic acid, and cetyl alcohol. Preparing the oil: In a large, microwave-safe bowl or cup, combine the oil, 1 fl oz (30 mL) stearic acid, and 1.2 fl oz (35 mL) cetyl alcohol. Stir well to combine the oils and ingredients. If you want to use more than one type of oil, you can do so as long as the total amount of oil used is 2.7 fluid ounces (80 mL).
3. Microwave the mixture for 2 minutes, or until the ingredients are completely melted. Make sure you have a timer set for about 2 minutes when you put the bowl or cup in the microwave. As soon as it has finished running, transfer the melted mixture back to your work environment. Give the ingredients a gentle stir to ensure that everything is completely melted together before serving.
If your mixture still does not appear to be melted after 15 to 30 seconds in the microwave, repeat the process.
4. Add a small amount of shea butter to the hot oil mixture. Pour 1.2 fl oz (35 mL) of shea butter into the melted oil and stir until completely dissolved. Gradually incorporate the shea butter into the mixture with a spoon. Do not heat the mixture in the microwave; instead, allow it to melt into the oil mixture on its own, stirring occasionally. Please be patient as this process may take a few minutes.
5. For one minute, bring your distilled water to a boil. Check to see that your distilled water is in a microwave-safe cup before placing it in your microwave oven. Set the cook time to one minute and bring the water to a warm but not boiling temperature before starting.
6. Gradually incorporate the distilled water into the oil mixture. Keep the melted oils, cetyl alcohol, and stearic acid in a separate container while you slowly pour the heated water into the main container, stirring constantly. Keep an eye out for a reaction to occur and the lotion to turn white.
In order to prevent spillage, store your oils in a container large enough to accommodate the water!
7. Using a hand blender, you can speed up the emulsifying process. A stick blender, as the name implies, is a small and long handheld device that can be powered by hand or by electricity. Connect the blender to the power source and turn it on for about 10 to 15 seconds. Stopping the blender and then restarting it will allow you to continue mixing the ingredients. Continue this process until your lotion is thick and not as runny as it was previously.
While it is not required, using a stick blender can greatly speed up the process of making your lotion.
An immersion blender is another name for this device. If you don’t already have one, you can purchase one for less than $20 online or at a home goods store.
8. Add a few drops of phenonip and fragrance to finish it off. Using an eyedropper tool, add approximately 0.2 fl oz (5.9 mL) of phenonip to the lotion, along with 0.1 fl oz (3.0 mL) of your desired fragrance. Stir all of the ingredients into the lotion until they are thoroughly combined to form a really cohesive mixture.
Phenonip and other fragrance oils are available for purchase on the internet. To scent your lotion, you can use whatever fragrance you want, but try not to go overboard with it. A little goes a long way in this case!
In the form of a liquid, phenonip helps to keep your cetyl alcohol lotion from becoming rancid over time.
9. After 2 hours, funnel the finished lotion into a reusable bottle and seal it tightly with a lid. Pour the mixture into a clean, open bottle through a funnel that has been placed along the mouth of the bottle. Waiting an hour or two will result in the lotion becoming very congealed, so transfer it to a bottle while it’s still a little fluid. Take off the top cap for a couple of hours to allow the excess water and moisture to evaporate, then replace it.
If you intend to sell the lotion, be sure to clearly label the ingredients on the front of the bottle.
You can keep the lotion in your refrigerator for several months! If it begins to look or smell rancid, discard it and start over with a fresh batch.
Method 2 Making a Creamy Luminizer
1. In a saucepan, bring 3 cm (1.2 in) of water to a boil to create a water bath. Fill a medium saucepan halfway with water, then set it on the stovetop to heat up the water. Increase the heat to its highest setting and continue to do so until the water is boiling. Then reduce the heat to medium-low to allow the boiling water to simmer for a few minutes.
This water bath will aid in the melting of your ingredients, resulting in a smooth and rich product.
2. To make the mask, combine jojoba oil, silica microspheres, cetyl alcohol, and mica powder in a heat-resistant glass bowl. 2.25 grammes jojoba oil to the bottom of the mixing bowl, then 0.75 grammes cetyl alcohol and 0.25 grammes silica microspheres, stirring until well combined. Add a pinch of hilite gold mica, as well as a pinch of both gold mica and silver mica, and mix thoroughly. It’s fine if your ingredients aren’t thoroughly combined at this point; they will come together once they are immersed in the water bath.
The mica powder contributes to the overall luminescence of your lumizer.
It may be preferable to use a digital scale to measure your ingredients because you are dealing with such small amounts of product here.
Make sure to use a bowl that is at least 3 to 4 in (7.6 to 10.2 cm) tall so that it does not become completely submerged in the bath water.
3. Make your way to the bath with the glass bowl so you can melt and mix the ingredients. Make sure you have a pair of mitts or gloves on before moving your bowl to the middle of the simmering water. Check to make sure that all of the ingredients are completely submerged in the hot water so that they can begin to melt and combine to form a uniform mixture.
4. After all of the ingredients have melted, remove the glass bowl from the oven. Make sure the mixture is as smooth as possible by using a rubber spatula to combine all of the ingredients together. Make the best of your ability to monitor the mixture—once the mixture is a clear liquid with no lumps, it is time to remove it from the hot water bath.
Examine the bowl to ensure that all of the tiny cetyl alcohol beads have completely melted before removing it from the water.
Protect your hands from hot water by always wearing mitts or protective gloves.
5. Add a small amount of vitamin E oil to the mixture and stir well. Combine a tiny spoonful, or approximately 0.0125 g, of vitamin E oil with the remaining ingredients in your luminizer. It may be necessary to use a small spoon or toothpick to ensure that the mixture is consistent.
6. Fill a small jar halfway with the melted ingredients. Set aside a small, clean glass jar with a capacity of approximately 5g (1 tsp) of liquid for this step. Pour all of the melted luminizer into your jar for easy transportation and archival storage.
7. Refrigerate the jar for 20 minutes after it has been sealed. Place the lumizer in your refrigerator with the lid securely fastened on top of it. Using some masking tape, make some labels for the jar so that you can remember what the product is and when it was created. To ensure proper congealing and setting, place the product in the refrigerator for 20 minutes before using.
8. Use the luminizer within one year of receiving it. Always keep an eye on the label of your product to make sure it isn’t going bad. Immediately discard your luminizer if it begins to smell rancid, as the oils are most likely rancid.
Applying Lumizer to your brow bones, Cupid’s bow, or cheekbones will give you the best results.
Tip: The colour of a product can be a good indicator of whether or not it is rancid. While minor colour changes aren’t a big deal, if your oil becomes extremely dark or a completely different colour, you may want to discard it.
